Why We Care THE CHALLENGE: Newburgh kids are in crisis. 80% of students in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District failed to meet New York State Standards in English Language Arts and Math in 2018. For African-American and Latino students this number approaches 90%. 38% of families in the City of Newburgh with children under the age of 18 live in poverty. The City of Newburgh was designated the “Most Violent City” in New York State for 7 of the last 10 years by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.
